Six wins for home town boys
THE home town contingent competing at Saturday’s High Impact Fight Night nearly had a perfect night at the Orange Ex-Services Club.
Six fighters from Orange and Millthorpe’s High Impact Gyms recorded victories, with only Phil Tyquin unsuccessful.
Tyquin went into his fight with Brendan Fox from Penrith on the back of six wins, but he was yet to win in his previous two fights at High Impact Fight Nights in Orange.
The 14-year-old was desperate to produce a win in front of his home crowd but was unable to deliver as an ankle injury forced him to retire, handing Fox a technical knock out (TKO).
Josh Primmer and Jono McCann had good wins in their tough fights, while Toby Westcott also improved his record in the first fight of the night.
Ten-year-old Westcott faced a bigger, stronger and more experienced 15-year-old fighter, but he proved his technique will hold up under pressure to triumph.
“Toby just had his best fight ever,” High Impact Gym head trainer Anthony Wharton said.
“Technically, his skill level was just better than his opponent.”
Orange’s Sean Norton implemented his plan to perfection to record his second win in five fights against Tim Dyball.
Millthorpe’s Brad Abbott also improved his fledgling record on Saturday night when he won his first fight at just his second attempt.
Auskir Berryman, Charles Jones and Chris McMiles put on exhibition bouts, as did juniors Triston Roach and Brock Campbell, who were supported by fellow juniors in each corner.
Juniors also staged an exhibition big glove fight for charity, with $500 going to prostate cancer research.
Event organiser Anthony Wharton was impressed with the fights staged and was also blown away by the support shown by the crowd of approximately 350 people.
“It was a really good crowd. It was a vocal crowd,” Wharton said.
“I think it was the most vocal and enthusiastic we’ve ever had.
“You couldn’t hear anything in there.”
